Want to save £120 per year?

Did you know that for a disposable sanitary pad wearer, the average period costs around £10 per month? That’s £120 a year, and nearly £5,000 across our menstrual lifetime. Crazy right?

The average cost of a disposable sanitary pad is 12p and it’s estimated that most of us would use 22 pads for every period. When you compare that to one of our Wear ‘Em Pads, the cost is closer to 0.06p per use. That’s actually 95% cheaper than leading disposable brands.

So by making the switch to reusables, we can save you £120 per year. You’re welcome! Against a backdrop of a looming recession and the ongoing cost-of-living crisis, we know that £120 could be far better spent right now.

We looked at other reusable products in the market to compare, and reusable pads come out cheaper again. A menstrual cup and period pants are estimated to cost around 19p per use based on their lifespan.

Let’s also look at the other significant cost associated with disposable sanitary products, the environmental one. The Women’s Environmental Network estimates that half the people who period in the UK flush tampons and sanitary pads away, and that 1.5-2 billion menstrual items are flushed down Britain’s toilets each year. Lots of these products will find their way into the sea . It’s pretty terrifying.

But since launch, Wear ‘Em Out have saved at least a potential 7,733,088 disposable products from being dumped into land waste and we’re pretty proud of this.

Additionally, disposable menstrual waste has a hefty cost attached when you take into account all the money spent through council tax and water rates to manage all the waste and blockages caused by disposable products. According to the same research from WEN, it costs £88 million a year to unblock sewers blocked by menstrual products in the UK. Add this to the 4.8 pieces of menstrual waste being found per 100m of British beaches being cleaned. Don’t even get us started on this.

The sustainability factor of reusable period products is an added but necessary bonus. One of our key priorities since launch has always been to reduce the amount of menstrual waste that ends up sitting in landfill or being flushed down the toilet and into the UK’s sewers each year. It can take up to 800 years for a disposable pad or tampon to decompose, clearly outliving the person who wore it. But this can be significantly reduced by using reusable products.

This is me enjoying my local beach, thankfully not a tampon or pad in sight (today)

I know what you’re going to say. This is all well and good, but the initial expense does put me off a bit. And we get it. But remember, Wear ‘Em Out pads can be reused multiple times, with the average reusable pad lasting for 3+ years. We also offer the option of Clearpay so you can spread the cost across four fortnightly interest free payments which we hope will help too.

Because in the long-run, switching today will save you money and you’ll be doing your bit for the environment. It’s a win-win situation.

So really the biggest decision that you must make now is, which of our fab patterns are you going to buy? We can’t help you there – we think they are all great!

Happy shopping.
