We’ve all been there (especially in the warmer weather), trying to discreetly wiggle the irritation on our under-carriage away
It’s not bad enough that we bleed for days but the itch that just won’t quit can take it to a new level of annoyance right?
If you are still wearing disposable sanitary pads then you may wanna take a closer look into the effects they are reportedly having on your body
So, current disposable sanitary pads are made using 90% single-use plastic, this means they’re not breathable, making your whole vulva a moist, (soz if that word makes you gag) breading ground for all kinds of nastiness and odours
Our vulvas need to breathe, give it some air babes
Aside from the lack of airflow, the fragrance applied to (most) disposable pads in a bid to cover up the over sweaty area, is said to contains *harmful chemicals which may cause a skin reaction and many other conditions that would cause far greater concern
womensvoices.org say ‘A closer look at the impacts of these products, and the chemicals they contain, tell a much different story. Products intended for use on or in an incredibly absorbent part of a woman’s body are marketed and sold with little to no data assuring the ingredients they contain are safe. Ingredients are determined “safe,” operating under the premise that they are used on ordinary skin just like other cosmetic products. That means chemicals of concern such as carcinogens, reproductive toxins, endocrine disruptors, and allergens are being used on, or even in, the extremely permeable mucus membranes of the vaginal area.’
Let’s break it down so that you are fully informed of what’s in most disposable sanitary pads
If the pad is when then that’s a red flag, the pad would have most likely been bleached, this process creates Dioxin, a highly toxic pollutant, whilst the levels in pads could be low, over time they store in our body fat and can hang around for up to 20 years. This exposure could lead to pelvic inflammatory disease, hormone dysfunction, endometriosis and even more terrifying, the big C
Mass produced cotton is sprayed with pesticides and these pesticides stay on the cotton way past its harvest. The affect of pesticides on our bodies could cause infertility, hormone disruption, diabetes, endometriosis and depression
The impermeable plastic used in disposable pads does not allow air through. The plastic traps moister and heat, meaning its the perfect environment for burning, chaffing and soreness (also it means these pads will sit on landfill for up to 800 years) and of course the icky odour (it’s not you thats kicking up babes, trust)
This is the biggest secret of disposable pads, what chemicals are used to create the fragrance in these pads? We’re not allowed to know the chemical concoctions that give us ‘odour neutralisers’ and the artificial fragrance. These chemicals sitting on our vulvas (which by the way are as sensitive as our eyeballs, and highly absorbent) can irritate the skin and cause all manor of nasty allergies and reactions
But, I’m sure that you’ll be pleased to know that there is another way, that you don’t have to suffer every month!
Our reusable period pads are made using moisture wicking breathable fabrics, with no single-use plastics or hidden toxic chemicals you’ll find yourself having a much more positive period, but don’t take our word for it (obvs I’m totally biased)
I asked our audience over on Instagram to share the positive impact they’ve seen with their periods since switching to our reusable period pads, you can see the full post here, but I’ll share a few comments with you now
Hold onto your hats…….
‘My periods used to be horrific, the cramping would be really bad. Now I have virtually no cramping, and I have a much lighter and shorted period. I always feel fresh and comfortable when wearing your pads as well, and I have never leaked like I used to with other pads.’
‘Less irritation, less pain, shorter periods, less painkillers, zero leaks…no more sleeping on a bath towel at night! Not worrying about the environmental impact of disposals and not having to remember to buy pads each month!! These pads have changed my life and made my period so much more comfortable and manageable. Forever thankful I found them on here!’
‘I no longer get period pains! Lighter periods, less leaks ( before I had tampons and pads and leaked a lot. After years of irregular periods I now feel normal as they seem to have more of a pattern now of 25-27 days cycle. I put off changing to reusables for so long due to my heavy periods but so glad I finally made the change.’
‘Much less waste & less cost each month ( I do use tampons at times). More comfortable with no irritation and a shorter timeframe of pain associated with each period. They are so easy to wash and dry pretty quickly too. I have been using them for over a year and they are still going strong with no leaks to report. One of the best investments i’ve ever made. Thanks Lauren xx’
I have to say the feedback amazes me even at times and of course I know how flippin’ good our pads are. And these aren’t the only positives, have a read of our previous blog ‘7 Benefits of Reusable Sanitary Pads’
